What is Full Spectrum CBD: Beyond the Label

Let’s clear a few things up. The term “Full Spectrum CBD” does not define the quality of a CBD Oil. Many people confuse this term with the association of a good CBD product. This is just not true. Oftentimes the term “Full Spectrum” is referring to a gross product known as “CBD Crude Oil” or “Whole Plant CBD Oil”

What is CBD Crude Oil? CBD crude oil is a type of extract derived from the entire hemp plant, including the flowers, leaves, stalks, and seeds. It may contain some unwanted substances like plant waxes, fats, or other impurities. CBD crude oil is typically extracted using solvent-based methods such as ethanol or supercritical CO2 extraction

In this article we dive into the truth of what the term “Full Spectrum" really means.

What does full spectrum CBD contain?

The most common phrase about Full spectrum CBD products is that, “Full Spectrum CBD” products contain a variety of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including CBD, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBG (cannabigerol), CBN (cannabinol), and others.

Each cannabinoid has unique properties that contribute to the overall effects of the product. While THC is known for its psychoactive effects at higher levels, in Full Spectrum CBD, it's present in such low concentrations (usually less than 0.3%) that it doesn't produce a “high” but can enhance the therapeutic benefits of CBD.

Now while this is all true this does not mean that a “Full Spectrum CBD Oil” is better than others. It only means that it has multiple cannabinoids in it. It doesn’t talk about the material that the Full Spectrum CBD Oil comes from or the different strains the full spectrum CBD Oil came from. This is simply a buzz word that does not tie anything to a quality CBD product.

Full Spectrum CBD may bring together multiple cannabinoids but understanding the source, the strains, and how its produced is even more important.

Other Terms associated with “Full Spectrum CBD Oil”

Terpenes: These aromatic compounds give cannabis its distinct smell and flavor. Terpenes like linalool, myrcene, and limonene are believed to offer therapeutic properties, such as anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and mood-enhancing effects.

Oftentimes in a full spectrum product the terpenes are degraded or destroyed due to the high temperatures and solvents involved that can strip away these delicate compounds. This extraction process often results in a less aromatic and therapeutic effect that Whole Flower Terpenes provide.

In addition full spectrum products can lead to a very processed final product. The need to remove ethanol and any unwanted compounded often requires additional extraction steps such as winterization, filtration, and distillation. These processes can strip away the natural terpenes.

Flavonoids: These compounds are responsible for the vibrant colors in the cannabis plant and contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The goal of Full Spectrum CBD is to leverage the full array of cannabinoids and terpenes to create what's known as the “entourage effect.”

Flavonoids also can be negatively affected by solvent interaction. As mentioned many Full Spectrum CBD Oil is made using ethanol or alcohol. In the same way the terpenes are degraded and lost, the Flavonoids are in the same boat.

The entourage effect explained

The entourage effect is a key concept in understanding the benefits of Full Spectrum CBD. This effect suggests that the combined action of multiple cannabinoids and terpenes can enhance the overall therapeutic benefits of the product. For instance, while CBD is known for its calming properties, the presence of even small amounts of THC and other cannabinoids can amplify these effects, offering a more comprehensive experience.

What is the difference between full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate?

  • Full Spectrum CBD: Contains all cannabinoids and terpenes, including THC (less than 0.3%).
  • Broad Spectrum CBD: Includes multiple cannabinoids and terpenes but has the THC removed.
  • CBD Isolate: Pure CBD with no other cannabinoids or terpenes.

Choosing full spectrum CBD Oil

One of the main advantages of Full Spectrum CBD is its potential to provide a more holistic therapeutic experience. The combination of cannabinoids and terpenes may offer enhanced benefits for a variety of conditions, such as anxiety, pain, and inflammation.

Just always remember that Full Spectrum CBD is only stating that it has multiple cannabinoids in it but neglecting to talk about its source, strains, or quality material.

Not all full spectrum products are created equally

Some companies may blend CBD isolate, which is an extracted form of CBD, with other isolated cannabinoids and still label the product as “Full Spectrum”. While this technically meets the definition, it may not provide the same holistic benefits as a product made naturally from a whole flower infusion like the CBD oil and CBG oil products made by Vermont Whole Flower.

Which form of CBD is most effective?

Plain and simple the most effective CBD is the one that is sourced from the most potent CBD Flower. The most effective form of CBD is also the strain that works best for you. Many people would recommend Full Spectrum CBD as the most effective but this is untrue and misleading.

The most effective CBD is made from trimmed CBD Flower, no solvents, and infused naturally into the carrier Oil. You essentially want to capture the CBD trichomes in their most raw state and combine it with the carrier Oil your CBD is going to bind with. Similar to raw foods which provide the highest nutrient value, CBD is best served when it has very little processing done to it.

Look for CBD Oil products made with quality trichomes

Trichomes are tiny glandular structures that are found on the surface of the CBD Flower. The trichomes are responsible for the CBD primary production. Storing the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. They are essentially the most crucial component of the plant for CBD production.

Trichomes are the most important factor when it comes to a quality CBD product. They directly influence the potency, consistency, and overall effectiveness of the CBD. Better trichomes mean a more effective product.
